Despite our good old British summertime playing tricks on us, with a real mix of weather – sometimes, very hot, sometimes chilly and often wet, Ickenham gardeners were not deterred as they attended the Autumn Show on Saturday 7th September – filling the Village Hall with fabulous displays of flowers, fruit, vegetables, and floral art as well as photographic, domestic, and creative junior entries. We were delighted to welcome some new entrants, many of whom won prizes. Amongst these were some of our local allotmenteers who had some fantastic fruit, flowers and vegetables to show. We hope they will encourage some of their fellow growers to join us next time too.
Floral Art
entries were spectacular, with their creations depicting “Harvest” and “Golden Times”
full of beautiful autumn colours.
Our Juniors
presented some fantastic entries – the creatures made using fruit and
vegetables made all our visitors smile.
Our Domestic
section was very well supported too and as always there was great competition
and camaraderie in the Men’s chunky apple cake Challenge!
Results of
our annual Sunflower competition were also on show. It seems that many plants
fell victim to the army of slugs that have been invading the flowerbeds of
Ickenham, but this year’s amazing winner measured an impressive 326 centimetres
and was grown by Anke and Ian Phillips.
As always,
there was a lovely atmosphere in the hall as visitors admired the exhibits and
enjoyed the ever-popular tea and homemade cakes.
Following
the formal judging, prizes were presented by Jackie and Ken from “Friends of
Ken Weinling” who work tirelessly to raise funds for Guide Dogs for the blind. Jackie
told us about the amazing fundraising they do to sponsor the training of Guide
dogs and told us about some of their success stories. An appearance by her very
friendly dog Loki made the afternoon complete. For more information about the
